THE MAKING OF A New City: Citrus Heights Will Become A District. Municipality Effective January 1, 1997

Citrus Heights' origins stretch back to the mid-1800s when the 14.2 - mile area on the north central edge of Sacramento County was used almost exclusively for grain farming, livestock grazing and olive and citrus orchard cultivation.

In the early 20th century, the area north of what is now Old Auburn Road between Auburn and Sunrise boulevards was subdivided into rural parcels with 5 - to 20-acre homestead plots.

By 1950, Citrus Heights' population had grown to 5,600 but was still considered to be a rural residential area outside the state's capital.
