TAIPEI, Jul. 1 (IPS) -- "We are not Hong Kong" is the common
refrain in Taiwan these days, where people watched China's
resumption of sovereignty over Hong Kong yesterday with keen
interest.
Hong Kong's reversion to China is prompting Taiwan to consider
what lies ahead for its people, amid speculation that Beijing may
step up efforts toward this island's reunification with the
mainland.
But to many here, the difference between Hong Kong, just freed
from 156 years of British colonial rule, and Taiwan, which China
considers a renegade province, could not be clearer.
