Why has cheesecake become the traditional treat for Shavuot in so many homes? It is highly unlikely that the ancient Hebrews baked cheesecakes in the desert, and there is no commandment saying "Thou shalt eat cheesecake for Shavuot."

The custom of celebrating Shavuot by eating dairy foods evolved in remembrance of the Hebrews' having avoided meat the day before Moses received the Ten Commandments.

Many families feast on noodle kugel with cottage cheese and sour cream, cheese blintzes or burekas with a savory cheese or spinach-and-cheese filling. But the favorite holiday food is undoubtedly cheesecake.
