After 20 years Lowery to retire as president of SCLC.
Southern Christian Leadership Conference (SCLC) national president Joseph E. Lowery, who ascended to the head of SCLC in 1977 when the Civil Rights Movement was floundering and carved out a legacy as the spokesman for minorities and the downtrodden, announced he will retire in August.
Lowery, who helped start the organization with founding president Martin Luther King Jr. (SCLC second president), Ralph David Abernathy, Fred Shuttlesworth and others, moved from chairman of the board to succeed Abernathy as the third president in the organization's history.
