A Quieter New Year in New York City: The story behind the fireworks ban.

For more than a hundred years in New York's Chinatown, the Lunar New Year has always kicked off with a bang -- the sound of firecrackers exploding over storefronts and at the feet of lion dancers parading from store to store, driving away evil spirits. But this year, for the first time in New York City history, Mayor Rudolph Giuliani officially banned the use of fireworks during the celebration, silencing an ancient tradition and raising voices of protest from the local community instead.
