PENANG, Malaysia, Nov. 30 (IPS) -- Malaysia's ruling coalition
achieved its target of a two-thirds parliamentary majority in
watershed general elections, but a noticeable swing among the
Malays towards the opposition dampened the Barisan Nasional's
celebrations and is likely to significantly change the country's
political landscape.
The coalition had bagged 148 seats in the 193-seat Parliament
against the opposition's 45. Nation-wide, Prime Minister Mahathir
Mohamad's dominant United Malays National lost a clutch of seats
to the Islamic Party, which convincingly recaptured northern
