It was to have been one of the happiest days of her life.
Susan Ballenzweig planned to mark her 50th birthday by having the bat mitzvah she'd never had as a girl. Her younger daughter, Ruth, celebrated her bat mitzvah in June; her older daughter, Rachel, four years ago.
