For most of my life as an American Jew, I have taken for granted the existence of Jewish organizations. Like many others of my generation who came of age in the 1960s and 1970s, I grew up with the reality of the Jewish federations; the Zionist organizations, perhaps most prominent among them Hadassah; the B'nai B'rith, in particular its Anti-Defamation League; the American Jewish Committee and the American Jewish Congress.
