In 1940, at the age of 17, Marcel Mangel forced his face into a smile, and pretending to be a scout leader, marched a bunch of Jewish and other kids out of France and into the Swiss Alps, at great risk to himself.

This boy -- already a master of disguise -- would soon take his place on a less dangerous stage, with a face as white as death and a bloody stripe for a mouth. The body, wise and elastic enough to fool the Nazis, became increasingly wily and disciplined.
