Susan Josephs' article, "The Bible, Live and Uncut" (June 23), portrays the writer as a persecuted woman besieged by a group of revisionists bent on undermining the holy Torah. Ms. Josephs' notion of Torah-true is naive in the extreme, dangerously narrow and not at all in keeping with Jewish tradition.
On the other hand, the "revisionists" are quite in line with the tradition of Torah reading that has characterized Jewish biblical exegesis from its earliest days. Literalism has never been a Jewish trait.
