Wynton Marsalis awarded Pulitzer Prize denied Duke Ellington 32 years ago
Virtuoso trumpeter Wynton Marsalis was awarded the 1997 Pulitzer Prize in music for his epic jazz oratorio on American slavery, "Blood on the Fields."
Since the creation of this eminent award in 1943, consistently it appeared to be earmarked for classical compositions in the music classification. The Pulitzer Prize Board recommended the 81st annual Pulitzer Prize winners in journalism, letters, drama and music. However, Columbia University President George Rupp made the official announcement on April 7 of the list of award recipients.
