Khatami seeks change in Persian Gulf image

TEHRAN, Iran, Jan.7 (UPI) -- Iran's President Mohammad Khatami called Sunday for
a change in the global view of the Persian Gulf region which he said " is
currently known only as a source of energy."

Khatami, in an address to an international conference on the global status of
the Persian Gulf, said that this image which the region did not "deserve" had
led, during the past century, to the emergence and expansion of alien forces,
resulting in wars, destructive crises as well as a monocultural economy.
