System Lets More Users Phone Home

CHINA, October 15, AsiaInfo Services, Inc -- China intends to set up
an integrated, advanced telecommunications network by the year 2000
that will have 174 million phone lines. Wang Jianzhou, an official of
the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, said the government will
invest 100 billion RMB yuan (US$ 12 billion) each year in the next
three years to build mobile phone channels for 18 million users,
200,000 kilometers of fiber-optic cables, 100,000 kilometers of digital
microwave lines and 40 satellite stations. "By then, about 40 percent
of the urban population will have access to phones," Wang said.
