Suicide Rate Nearly Doubles in Thirty Years for Black Males

Suicide has become one of the leading causes of death in the black community. The suicide rate has increased to 93 percent for African American males in the last three decades and in 1994, black males accounted for six percent of U.S. suicides.

According to a study done by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suicide is the third leading cause of death among young black men and the ninth overall in the United States. The number one cause of death among young black men remains homicide, followed by death due to drowning, fires and motor vehicle crashes.
