FAMU raising funds for ailing tennis great Althea Gibson
The former great tennis star Althea Gibson, who is now 69 years old, ailing and a reclusive in East Orange, N.J., has not been forgotten by her alma mater, Florida A and M University. Through its alumni association, FAMU is sponsoring a campaign to raise funds for this legend who crashed racial barriers when she won two US Opens and a French Open in the late 1950s.
According to FAMU, Miss Gibson is supported only by Medicare and social security. She has already survived two strokes, FAMU reports, and two neighbors attend to her needs. Though she is near destitute, FAMU says, Miss Gibson would not ...
