LATE LAST year, Bergen County Democrats raised an alarm that a
shortfall in revenue would force a countywide tax hike of about $18
million. But County Executive William "Pat" Schuber dismissed the
suggestion as "fantasy allegations."
Now it looks as though that "fantasy" has become a reality, both
for Mr. Schuber and the county's taxpayers.
This week the county executive proposed a $328 million budget
calling for a $17.2 million tax hike -- the first significant increase in
