ANKARA - Israel is expected to deliver at least 40 Popeye I air-to-air missiles to Turkey this year as part of a $40 million deal, and a second package of 60 of the 150-km. range missiles has been promised for 1998.

Both countries agreed to speed up the sale after Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Amnon Lipkin Shahak visited Turkey last week.

A defense source said that missiles can be used on Turkey's F-16s and F-4s. The source added that with the necessary launching equipment, the missiles could also be used for air-to-surface purposes.
