Russia's President Vladimir Putin is in Cuba beginning a four-day
visit designed to re-establish a Moscow-Havana partnership. Putin,
who was greeted last night at Havana airport by President Fidel Castro,
is the first Russian leader to visit Cuba since the breakup of the
Soviet Union in 1991. The collapse of Soviet communism spelled the
end to massive subsidies to Cuba and the beginning of hard times for
the island's population. NPR's Tom Gjelten reports from Havana.
