The rates of food poisoning and diarrhea outbreaks in the Israel Defense Forces has dropped by nearly half during the past few years, with salmonella bacteria largely replacing the more fierce shigella, according to a new study by the IDF Medical Corps and Tel Aviv University's Sackler Medical School.
The nine-page study, by Drs. Itamar Grotto, Yossi Mandel, Yitzhak Ashkenazi, and Yehoshua Shemer, was published in the latest issue of Harefuah, the journal of the Israel Medical Association.
