VILNIUS, Lithuania, Jan. 25 (IPS) -- The entry of Lithuania
and Poland into the European Union (EU) will bring additional
investment opportunities to the Kaliningrad area, Russia's
militarized Baltic enclave captured from Germany by the Red Army
in 1945.
The area is expected to become a Russian Federation territory
island inside an enlarged Europe very soon.
Closed to foreigners until 1991, Kaliningrad suffers from
environmental pollution and needs investment to help solve its
key infrastructural and social problems.
It is expected that Kaliningrad's neighbors, Lithuania and
Poland, will speed up their integration process into the EU this
