Political and personal messages in pop music are quite common these
days. Artists from the early days of pop have actually created second
careers by putting an edge into their songs. Marvin Gaye sang a lot
of sugary sweet Motown influenced pop songs before his album "What'
s Going On" in 1968. It was an album full of his thought on the state
of black America, and it wasn't pretty. Stevie Wonder was Little
Stevie Wonder in the 1960s, and he also sang plenty of sweet pop songs
