France, Germany Seek Better Ties

PARIS (AP) -- When the leaders of France and Germany sit down to a meal in the eastern French city of Strasbourg this week, they will have a lot more to digest than drinks, dinner and dessert.

The two nations that are the driving force behind European integration are having trouble swallowing each other's vision of the future. They must put their differences aside for Wednesday's meeting if Europe's nations are to march in step and act as a counterbalance to the United States.

Germany is gingerly taking on a new leadership role, pushing its vision of a more unified continent as the European Union ...
