U.S. Secretary of Education Richard W. Riley today announced the
award
of nearly $213 million in new grants to 386 school districts in 46
states
to establish high-quality afterschool community learning centers.
Riley
also opened a new $200 million competition that will provide afterschool
grants to an additional 400 communities this spring.
The grants announced today will support about 1,500 new school-
based
centers in communities across the country that have submitted well-
developed
plans for meeting the needs of young people in their communities.
