Sen. Kennedy Thrives in Opposition

BOSTON (AP) -- Last week, Sen. Edward M. Kennedy joined President Bush at an elementary school in Washington to help unveil the new administration's education plan.

Yet even as he answered questions outside the Merritt Elementary Extended School, Kennedy was spearheading the campaign to derail the nomination of Bush's choice to be attorney general.

A Democratic stalwart who has been in the Senate since 1962, Kennedy relishes his latest challenge: another Republican White House. More than most lawmakers, he has thrived on opposition.
