Fed: Howard says petrol decision was not a political quick fix

CANBERRA, March 3 AAP - The government's decision to cut petrol excise was not a political
quick fix, Prime Minister John Howard said today.

Mr Howard said the decision to cut fuel excise by 1.5 cents a litre was made in response
to strong public concern.

"We didn't take this decision thinking it was some sort of clever quick fix," Mr Howard
told journalists.

"We did it because we thought it was what the public wanted and (it) was in the interests
of good policy to respond to very strong community concern.
