Swiss Voters Reject EU Talks

GENEVA (AP) -- Showing their staunch independence, Swiss voters on Sunday overwhelmingly rejected a proposal for immediate membership talks with the European Union, according to exit polls and early results.

Some 78 percent of voters threw out the proposal ``Yes to Europe,'' according to normally reliable exit polls cited by Swiss television. As results from the nation's 26 states trickled in, the sheer scale of the rejection among the German-speaking majority -- which tends to be skeptical of closer ties with the rest of Europe -- became apparent: 87 percent voted ``no'' in the small states of Glarus ...
