JOHANNESBURG, Mar. 19 (IPS) -- South African Foreign Minister
Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma has been working hard behind the scenes to
insert pro-democracy, good governance, and human rights
provisions into the draft charter of the new African Union, a
governing body expected to replace the Organization of African
states soon.
The draft charter of the African Union, which could be
formally ratified as soon as July, currently includes the right
of the African Union to intervene, "in a member state pursuant to
a decision of the assembly in respect of grave circumstances,
namely war, genocide and crimes against humanity."
