PORT OF SPAIN, Mar. 23 (IPS) -- As a devout Roman Catholic,
Venus Roach was disappointed. Like many others, she had hoped for
a homegrown archbishop to succeed Anthony Pantin, who died just
over a year ago.
"We want a local archbishop. I am really against it," she
said, while other devotees and some clergymen openly castigated
the Vatican over the appointment of 64-year-old U.S.-born Bishop
Edward Gilbert as head of the local church here.
Gilbert, who since 1994 has been bishop of the Roman Catholic
Church in the neighboring island of Dominica, will become the
first Redemptorist to be working in Trinidad and Tobago when he
