State prison population growth slows

WASHINGTON, Mar 26, 2001 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Nearly 2 million people were in U.S. jails the middle of last year, but the nation's state prison population growth of 1.5 percent over the 12 months ending June 30 represented the smallest percentage in 29 years, the Justice Department said Sunday.

The population in federal prison facilities grew by 9.3 percent during the same time period.

Combined, state and federal prison populations grew by 30,710 during the 12 months, the smallest increase in a decade and only about half the average annual growth of nearly 60,000 since 1990.
