Religious body says smoking against Islam

ISLAMABAD, Pakistan, Apr 01, 2001 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Pakistan's highest religious body, the Islamic Ideology Council, proposed Sunday a ban on smoking, declaring it a habit that violates Islam.

Urging the Pakistan government to "impose a complete ban on smoking," the IIC said the habit was introduced to Muslims by their colonial rulers and that Muslim rulers had no justification for sustaining this bad habit.

"It is clearly an un-Islamic act," said Dr. Ghulam Murtaza Azad, the IICs Director General. "All Muslims should refrain from smoking."
