Qld: Black Sigatoka found in north Queensland
BRISBANE, April 5 AAP - The potentially devastating banana disease black sigatoka has
been discovered in north Queensland less than 12 months after a previous outbreak.
The latest outbreak of the fungal disease, which can devastate banana plantations,
is at Tully, between Cairns and Ingham.
It was found in a stand of wild banana plants about one kilometre from the nearest
commercial plantation.
Queensland Fruit and Vegetable Growers banana committee chairwoman Vicky Kippin-O'Connor,
said while the outbreak was disturbing, established response procedures were in place.
