Trout feed under the surface up to 90 percent of the time. Even
when a hatch is taking place, it's well-known that many trout continue
feeding under the water's surface, close to the bottom, where the nymphs
are actively moving and exposing themselves to the predatory trout. Or
they feed closer to the surface where they can pick off the defenseless
emergers before they actually emerge.
