Qld: Banana disease found on three properties
BRISBANE, April 9 AAP - The banana leaf disease black Sigatoka had been found on three
properties in far north Queensland, the Department of Primary Industries (DPI) said today.
The disease has the potential to destroy Australian banana crops but has so far been
prevented from gaining a hold in Australia despite several outbreaks in recent years.
The latest outbreak was discovered last week on a stand of feral bananas in the Tully region.
DPI general manager of plant health, Ken Priestly, said the new outbreaks of the disease
had all been within three kilometres of the original site.
