Behavioral therapy might help insomnia

DURHAM, N.C., Apr 10, 2001 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Changing insomniacs' attitudes about sleep may be the best way to help them conquer sleep deprivation and catch some shut-eye, according to a new study.

Researchers at Duke University Medical Center in Durham, led by psychologist Jack D. Edinger, found cognitive behavior therapy effectively helps patients combat chronic insomnia.

The approach involves talking with patients about their feelings toward sleep and teaching them new and healthier sleep routines, such as getting out of bed at the same time every day even if that means losing sleep, and ...
