May 3, 2001 STATEMENT OF SENATOR WARNER Hearing on USS COLE The Committee
meets this morning to continue its review of the October 12, 2000,
terrorist
attack on USS COLE in the Port of Aden, Yemen, which resulted in the
deaths
of 17 American sailors. This attack was a vivid reminder of the risks
our
men and women in uniform face, on a daily basis, to protect our freedom
around the world. The attack was also a warning of the ever-prevelant
terrorist
threat to our troops, and the urgent need for improved force protection
measures to deal with that threat. The Committee began its series
of hearings
on issues related to the attack on USS COLE within days of the attack,
