In 1947, first lady Eleanor Roosevelt helped found the United Nations Human Rights Commission. She was then elected to head the commission, and the US has been a member ever since. But last week, the United States was not able to pick up enough votes to keep a seat on the Human Rights Commission. What happened? Apparently, China lobbied hard to have the US kicked off the commission. According to published reports, the Chinese offered aid to some countries in exchange for votes. A former UN diplomat ...
