Hutu Rebels Attack Burundi Troops

BUJUMBURA, Burundi (AP) -- Hutu rebels attacked a Burundian military camp near the capital just before dawn Wednesday in a bid to capture weapons, a spokesman for the insurgents said.

Five rebels were killed and four soldiers and three civilians were wounded in the attack on Gatumba camp, said army spokesman Col. Augustin Nzabampema. The camp is 10 miles west of the capital, Bujumbura, in swampy plains near the Congolese border.

Anicet Ntawuhiganayo, a spokesman for the rebel National Liberation Front, said the insurgents were searching for weapons in anticipation of an escalation in the seven-year conflict with government forces.
