Fed: Banana issues paper released by Biosecurity
CANBERRA, May 10 AAP - The nation's quarantine watchdog has asked Australian banana
growers to detail the impact they believe imported Filipino bananas would have on the
local industry.
Biosecurity Australia (BA) is calling for comment on an issues paper it has released
on a proposal from the Philippines to export bananas to Australia.
Australia does not import bananas from any country, because of concerns about diseases
such as black sigatoka.
Local banana growers are angry at the proposal, fearing black sigatoka will be introduced
to areas of Australia now free of the disease.
