Friday, May 18, 2001 -- To protest the opening of the local McDonald's on Shabbat, Beit Shemesh haredi rabbis plan to close their synagogues this Shabbat at 11 and bring their congregations to pray in the restaurant's parking lot.
"We want to show McDonald's that Shabbat is important and sacred in Israel. It hurts our congregants that the restaurant does not respect Jewish tradition," said protest organizer and Beit Shemesh Rabbi Ben-Tzion Mutzafi.
