Warren Leight's "Side Man" revives a bygone era of jazz, before electric guitars and television and other media made so many musicians dispensable. Leight's semi-autobiographical tale revolves around a dysfunctional family headed by a struggling trumpet player, a true side man, who could play the spectacular solos as well as blend into the background. The side man didn't care what his role was, as long as he was playing his horn.
Artists Repertory Theatre's version of this Tony Award-winner, continuing through July 1, conveys the complications of the side man's lifestyle, always working late, always working weekends, always broke. ...
