NSW: NSW prison population expected to increase

SYDNEY, June 11 AAP - NSW's prison population is expected to increase almost 12 per
cent by 2003, a state parliamentary inquiry will be told tomorrow.

But the inquiry's chairman today said the government could save millions of dollars
by diverting offenders away from jail and into more community-based punishments.

Liberal MP John Ryan said the figures on inmate numbers would be included in submissions
from the Department of Corrective Services to the next public hearing of the select committee
on the Increase in Prison Population.
