Nitric oxide key to newborn lung condition
NASHVILLE, Jun 13, 2001 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- Scientists say a lack of nitric oxide is the key to understanding why newborn infants get persistent pulmonary hypertension, which can cause them to starve for oxygen because blood is not pumped through the lungs.
Dr. Marshall Summar, associate professor of pediatrics at Vanderbilt University Medical Center, has discovered a link between the ability to generate the compound nitric oxide and development of the newborn disorder.
