The earth here in southwestern Georgia is shockingly red, great expanses
of rich terre cotta loam between forests of pine and fields of corn,
all along the interstate from Atlanta to Plains. It's a drive that
former President Jimmy Carter often makes, as he travels from the
Carter Center in Atlanta to his home in Plains. There are just 245
families who claim permanent residence in this town, along with a
