If it was ever in doubt that New Jersey had the highest per-person
property taxes in the nation, a new study by the U.S. Census Bureau
provides fresh confirmation.

The study to be released today analyzed spending by state and local
governments nationwide in 1998. It found that per person, New Jerseyans
paid $1,744 in property taxes, more than double the national average of
$851.
