IT'S been just over a decade since the Singapore Mass Rapid Transit Ltd
(SMRT) was incorporated to operate the island republic's mass rapid transit
system. With the expiration of its initial 10-year operating licence in
March 1998, it was awarded a fresh 30-year licence and operating agreement
(LOA) effective April 1. A year later, the company had a new platform of
financial independence and long-term business planning.
Moving into the new millennium, the SMRT is becoming a more
integrated, multi-modal transportation company. MRT services will eventually
include the Light Rail Transit (LRT), buses and taxis. Integration of the
