MEMBERS of the private sector and the Senate yesterday opposed the
Agriculture and Cooperatives Ministry's project to build silos across the
country at a cost of more than Bt10 billion, saying it was not the right
way to solve the problem of falling rice prices.

The criticism came at a roundtable discussion on "Who really benefits
from the silo project?", hosted by The Nation. It was attended by representatives
of the private-sector rice industry, including millers and exporters, the
central rice market, silo owners and senators-elect. Representatives of
the ministry withdrew from the forum at the last minute.
