Article: Human rights to be on agenda, NATION

ASEAN has decided to put the issue of human rights and the creation
of a regional body to promote and protect universal rights on its official
agenda for future action, according to an informed source.

The issue was discussed at the informal dinner on Sunday and taken up
again during the retreat yesterday.

Although there was no consensus among members, there seemed to be
agreement that Asean needed to seriously pursue the proposal.

At the 1993 Asean ministerial meeting in Singapore, Asean agreed to
find an appropriate regional mechanism on human rights. Seven years have
elapsed, but Asean has yet to take up the issue officially.
