SIEMREAP, Thurs: The original six countries of the Association of South-
East Asian Nations (Asian) are in favor of giving tax breaks to its four
new members to allow better integration of the grouping.
An Asian official said the tax breaks are to be in the form of
generalized system of preferences (GSP).
He noted that the initiative needs to be implemented as soon as
possible as most goods in Asian will have tariffs of below 5 per cent by
2003.
"The two-year duration that we have now should be enough to stimulate
growth in the new economies," he told reporters on the sidelines of the
7th AEM Retreat here today.
