WHEN digital video was first introduced into the personal computer
(PC) world, it faced many challenges. However, among them included digital
video being a proprietary standard.

Most video capture board were "codec-specific". This means that if you
capture video with Brand X video capture card, you would not necessary
be able to playback the clip on just any PC.

There was no common standard at that time. By the way, a codec stands
for compressor and decompressor which is used to compress and decompress
digital video data.

Anyway, this made using digital video very inconvenient.
