Season's third tropical storm forms

MIAMI, Aug 16, 2001 (United Press International via COMTEX) -- The third tropical storm of the hurricane season formed Thursday in the Atlantic Ocean, prompting watches and warnings for several islands in the eastern Caribbean.

Tropical Storm Chantal, with top winds of 40 miles per hour and with higher gusts, was located about 370 miles east of Barbados at 8 a.m. EDT. It was speeding to the west at about 28 miles per hour, the National Hurricane Center in Miami said.
